Official Press Release on this:
“Youngsters & Students will benefit the most from the facility of hi-speed internet at very reasonable costs which will suitably fit in their budgets as Qubee introduces True Prepay Broadband first-time ever in Pakistan”, this was stated by the chief marketing officer of Qubee Mr. Hashim Sheikh while launching Qubee’s Prepay Broadband service.
He said that Qubee maintains its domination in introducing innovations one after another as it is leading all its contemporaries from the front after inducting the 1st real Prepay Broadband service in its portfolio.
While highlighting the exclusive features of Qubee Prepay Broadband, Hashim Sheikh said the prepay package is primarily focused towards people with limited cash flows, who want to be in total control of their spending.
Qubee Prepay Broadband is providing the consumers with an exclusive advantage of balance carry over, which allows users to carry forward existing balance of their accounts that might be present upon card expiry. For example if a user is unable to use the entire stored value of their card and the scratch card expires, then the remaining value will be carried forward once the user recharges his/her account with the next card. In this way, not a single penny of the consumer will be wasted and he/she will get the full reward of his/her money-spent.
Qubee Prepay Broadband ends the trend of making long-term contracts between consumers & the service provider as the customers will only pay for what they use.

Ever since the WiMAX industry saw its first commercial roll-out courtesy of Wateen, which was arguably the biggest commercial WiMAX network in the world, it has not enjoyed the glory the investors may had anticipated. Situation is not different for other WiMAX operators too, though they are making some money but balance sheets are not that catchy.
Reason is: We, as Pakistanis, are not used to pay for data services – probably because paying for data services is a secondary stage that comes after the primary understanding of what data services actually are.
When Mobilink launched its WiMAX services under the marquee ‘Mobilink Infinity’, it was termed as the 10th best launch by the WiMAX Forum. Quite an achievement, right? To me, on the other hand, it appeared like a cart about to sail down a steep unobstructed path straight into the slums because:
- Common users did not have a hint of what WiMAX is; they did not care and they should not have cared too!
- To a good educated majority it seemed to be as just another internet connection able enough to take them to their Yahoo inboxes
- Our marketing was as un-educating as anything you might think of
This argument is valid for Qubee too. Along with WiMAX providers other broadband operators kept venturing in, for instance PTCL released its EVO connections, and the market grew tougher. It became gruesome for the operators to strive for their share of customers and survive the brutality.
Mobilink perhaps did not try getting serious with the situation; it did not look ready to give Infinity a refresher. Things worsen so much that the sales and operations staff had to rely on door-to-door sales services to register few bits on the work sheets.
Those working in Infinity’s teams are worried for their future; for the future of WiMAX; for the return of time and energy they have put in thus far. We have heard that WiMAX arm of Mobilink is certainly not doing well financially, and it is evident from its long awaited spread out in Lahore and Islamabad – which is yet to happen. The parents (Orascom) are a little offhanded about their child and are reluctant to float in some cash for obvious reasons.
Industry, as a whole, has started to show some sort of a shape:
- Wi-tribe rising above all as the most rigorous – if not efficient – service provider in terms of its customer support and problem resolution services. Though limited data packages remain their biggest constraint when compared to Wateen.
- PTCL cashing its status of a blind king and utilized its deployed network, established lines and age old customers to grasp a decent figure of subscribers
- Abundance of managerial issues, financial mishaps and having more than one core product, Wateen never managed to shine the way it could have
- Qubee trying to expand
- Mobilink Infinity…waiting for the right time
Broadband industry is perhaps waiting for that alleged data boom in the country and all shareholders are saving their money for that time.
One may argue that regulatory bodies as well as service operators should have been more pragmatic on their marketing, educational and sales fronts rather than deducing their bits of satisfaction by registering the country as the first good-for-nothing WiMAX hub.

I use PTCL EVO as my primary Internet connection. As you may know Its a USB dongle which connects with my Laptop Now, sometimes when I need to access Internet on my other devices such as net-book, cell phones, etc simultaneously I end up with no option to share my EVO’s internet with them.
This feature of Windows 7 “Set up a wireless Ad Hoc Network” comes really handy in such situation. Just In few clicks I can access my EVO’s Internet on my all other devices. This can work with all WiMAX dongles too, meaning that you can share your Wateen, wi-tribe, Qubee internet with other computers, devices too. So give it a try – it’s a life savior.
How to Define AD Hoc Network:
The first thing to do is to access “Set up an Ad Hoc Network” wizard. To get the wizard going, search it from the start menu.
- Click On Start Button
- Type “ad hoc” in search box

- Click “Set up a wireless ad hoc (computer-to-computer) network”

- Now “Fill in the blanks”. Your times starts now and no cheating

ummm ok let me help you on this “but don’t tell anyone”.
-
- In Network name write whatever you want to call your network. I choose “NGTECH”
- Security type: Select “WEP” ( WEP is an older security method. But it works on most of the devices flawlessly. so choose this.)
- Security Key : Type the security key.
In WEP Security method you can set up a key that is only 5 or 13 characters long.
- Optional Step : Tick “Save this network” in case you don’t want to create a temporary network. But this option sometimes create an issue and gives limited access error when I hibernate pc. You can try what works best for you.
- Click Next
- Click “Turn on Internet connection sharing” and Tada you are done.

In case you face any problems while setting up AD HOC network then share in comments.

A fixed line PTCL DSL is not a viable option for me in Abbottabad, so as luck would have it, I ended up owning not one, but two Wateen Wimax connections after moving to Abbottabad from Lahore – I believe this irony has something to do with god deciding to punish me for my sins in this world rather than the hereafter.
My first Wateen router, the indoor CPE, did not work out of the box, as I live on the ground floor and Wimax was probably invented exclusively for people higher up. After trying a hundred locations all around the house, multiplied by a hundred different angles and orientations, the best signal strength that I could find was a measly 2/5 bars, which translated to a 20Kbps out of the 1Mbps speed that I was paying for. Out of sheer desperation, I tried placing the device sideways and facing upwards, which is the exact opposite of how it is supposed to stand, and placed it closer to the floor, under a plant – and in a eureka moment (anything that increases bandwidth is pure bliss, right?), the signal strength shot from 2/5 to 4/5 and even 5/5 bars! Apparently, the plant catches the signals and throws them downwards using some kind of druid magic.
Since then, my experiments show that most plants and small trees act as great Wimax antennae – for the USB modems, for example, if you are working from a park, sitting below a tree will give you at least a 20% increase in signal. Now I understand what Buddha was up to when chose to spend his life beneath a tree. So here it is, my plantenna

Perhaps Yateem can resuscitate their business by giving out a plant with each modem. If you try this configuration, do let me know about your results.
A few months ago, Wateen released the USB version of its Wimax modem, which would be perfect for the “location independent professionals” if not for the same signal strength situation as the larger modem. Their towers are a kilometer from my house, but the USB modem failed function inside my house. As I did not intend to die by frost or mosquito bites, I was planning to return the device the next day when I decided to experiment with cantennas. The cantenna I made took the Wifi signal inside my home from a non-functional 0%-20% to a fully functional consistent 40%-60%!

The instructions are simple. Take a cola can, chop off the top half, create a slit wide at the base that is enough to place the can between the modem and its USB adapter and you are done. No wire loops to make, no can diameters to calculate and no need to wrap aluminum foil around concave surfaces.
I think this hack should also work with the EVDO USB devices, as I hear a lot of complaining regarding the signal strength from the PTCL EVDO users. If you try it out, I’d be very interested to hear about it in the comments.
P.S. Being away from one’s blog for months isn’t a great idea, but I have been busy coping with a lot of change – the deliberate kind (like moving from Lahore to Abbottabad for a while – more on that later) and the uncontrollable kind (my family getting into a car accident – more on that later). I will resume the brain-dump here in the days to come.
