PTCL to invest Rs16 billion in next five years: Walid

Pakistan Telecommunications Company (PTCL), would invest about Rs16 billion in telecommunications sector in next five years in Pakistan, this was stated by the President and CEO PTCL Walid Irshad.

Addressing a luncheon meeting at Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI), Irshad said that PTCL is going to introduce super-speed internet very soon in Pakistan and it would be started from Korangi Industrial Area.

“The era of conventional telephone exchanges is now over and most modern exchanges would now be installed in Pakistan. PTCL is not being run just as Phone Company but as an investment-oriented company which is striving hard to introduce most modern telecommunications services,” he said.

He said that first ever new generation telephone exchange would be introduced in Karachi He said that PTCL has already minimized the subscribers’ complaints and with the introduction of new services and new generation telephone exchanges, the complaints would become nil.

The Chairman, KATI, Syed Johar Ali Qandhari said in his welcome address that telecommunications plays vital role in trade and industry and PTCL has improved its performance over the years.

He said that sometimes industrialists face hardships in broadband and internet which needs to be improved. He said that PTCL should set up a full-fledged cell at KATI so that subscribers’ woes should be addressed.

Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) has broadband subscribers base doubled to increase 100 percent and network coverage areas expanded to five times in past 16 months.

Ufone Posts Handsome Growth; Revenues up 16% and Profits up 78% in 3QFY11

Ufone continued its remarkable track record in the telecom industry with handsome growth in revenues by 16 percent and in profit by 78 percent in the third quarter of current fiscal year ended in March 2010.

Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) financial report said that it wholly-subsidiary outperformed again to consolidate a quite strengthening position of the company in terms of its financial stability.

Ufone, the wholly owned subsidiary of PTCL, revenue could be increased to 14 billion in the third quarter of 2010-11 whereas and profit could be to reach at Rs1.5 billion as per estimate of last calendar and quarter earnings and profitability.

The report did not disclose the absolute number of profit and revenue of Ufone, which is also called as Pak Telecom Mobile Limited (PTML).

Ufone revenues and profits were considered as significant for the overall earning of the parent company, PTCL. The remarkable results once again support the whole group to announce better result in the third quarter despite high overall operating cost and multiple losses on different accounts.

The PTCL net profit of Rs. 7.91 billion showed a 14 percent decline compared to same period last year. The Profit-after-Tax stood at Rs. 4.97 billion was 37 percent lower than the same period last year mainly because of increased employment cost.

Ufone earning witnessed record growth with handsome in crease in profit by 82 percent and revenue by 16 percent in first half of current fiscal year 2010-11.

Its revenues and profit were estimated to cross Rs 25 billion and Rs 2 billion benchmark on growing earnings and profitability.

BZU Students / Officials to Get Discounted EVO Services

PTCL has signed an agreement with Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan, which will enable Bahauddin Zakariya University students, staff, faculty and university administration to avail PTCL’s EVO services at discounted prices.

According to the agreement, Bahauddin Zakariya University students / officials can get EVO devices at 50 percent discount rate, i.e. Rs. 2,000 instead of regular Rs. 4,000 first up charges.

Similarly, monthly EVO charges will be deducted at Rs. 1,250 instead of regular Rs. 2,000 charges per month.

PTCL EVO has signed similar agreement with various other organizations, including universities, medical colleges and government institutions.

Students of other national universities can also push their administration to sign similar agreement with PTCL, so that such discounts are made available for them as well.

PTCL to Offer 50 Mbps Internet Speed

PTCL is working on a project, after which, it will be able offer broadband internet of 50 Mpbs, said a statement issued by the company.

An industry first, Pakistan’s PTCL will be using VDSL2 Bonding technology to provide existing digital subscriber line (DSL) customers with speeds up to 50 Mbps.

The project leverages Alcatel-Lucent’s VDSL2 Bonding expertise and should be completed by the end of the second quarter of 2011.

VDSL2 Bonding takes two copper-based VDSL2 lines per subscriber and aggregates them – almost doubling the bandwidths available to existing customers, or expanding high-speed broadband access to areas that are underserved today. Using VDSL2 Bonding, service providers can extend the life of their existing copper infrastructure – supporting the delivery of bandwidth-intensive services such as triple-play voice, data and IPTV.

According to a recent study from market research firm IHS iSuppli, simultaneous access to applications such as peer-to-peer file sharing, online gaming, streaming audio, VoIP and IPTV will soon require bandwidths between 50 and 100Mbps. This fits exactly with VDSL2’s capabilities, especially when combined with innovations such as Bonding and Vectoring.

Commenting on this achievement President and CEO PTCL Walid Irshaid has stated

“PTCL is the first service provider worldwide to deploy a commercial VDSL2 Bonding solution that aims at doubling the bandwidths provided to its existing customers. We are thus setting the trend in international telecoms, and are taking the broadband experience in Pakistan to the next level.

Alcatel-Lucent is providing PTCL with its Intelligent Services Access Manager (ISAM) IP access platform – which is the first platform to commercially support VDSL2 Bonding. Alcatel-Lucent will also supply Bonding-ready customer premises equipment (CPE). Alcatel-Lucent serves as the project’s master network integrator, and is providing a range of professional services – including project management, installation and commissioning, integration and technical support.

VDSL2 Bonding is an ideal approach: service providers like PTCL can almost double the speeds supported by their DSL infrastructure or expand their network’s reach. “This commercial VDSL2 Bonding project with PTCL marks the beginning of VDSL2 Bonding deployments outside of the US – where the technology is typically used to expand the reach of the copper network.”

PTA May Penalize PTCL if Quality of Service isn’t Enhanced

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has given PTCL a time duration of 6 months to improve quality of service to avoid strict legal action of the authority as per the law.

This penalty would be resultant of PTA’s show cause notice to PTCL on February 4th, 2010.

Background:

PTA’s February 4th, 2010th show cause notice was issued to PTCL based on the results of a nationwide quality of service survey. Results were as following:

PTA termed these results below the benchmark defined by the authority and issued a show cause notice to PTCL.

In response to which, PTCL responded multiple times to entertain PTA’s queries, but apparently authority wasn’t convinced and it passed an order against PTCL to enhance its services or to face the action.

Confusion in Determination:

In a PTA order, published on PTA’s website, two members of the authority ordered 6 months as notice period for PTCL to enhance its services, while the PTA chief contracted both the members and said that 29 days are enough for the PTCL to improve service quality.

Members PTA Ordered:

The Authority has considered the submissions of the licensee and took a lenient view for this time and decided to dispose of the show cause notice dated 4th February, 2010 in the following terms:

- Since the licensee has failed to satisfy the Authority on the aforementioned contraventions made by it regarding mandatory level and standards of Quality of Service, however, keeping in view the difficulties being faced by it and the progress made so far on this account after the issuance of show cause notice, the licensee is, therefore, directed to remedy the aforementioned contraventions by bringing and maintaining the required standards of quality of service within six (06) months of the issuance of this order.

In case of failure strict legal action will be initiated against the licensee under the provisions of the Act, the rules/regulations and the license conditions.

While on other hands Chairman PTA said:

Since, the Authority is unanimously not satisfied with the reply of the licensee and has reached to the conclusion that the licensee has failed to provide the QoS to its customers as per the standards laid down in license and the regulations on the subject, therefore, I disagree with the enforcement order passed by both the members for granting six month time for remedying the contraventions.

I am of the view that the enforcement order should be passed according to the rules and regulations.

According to rule 9(4) of Pakistan Telecommunication Rules, 2000 if the Authority is not satisfied, it can grant time to the licensee for remedying the contravention which shall be less than thirty days from the date of service of the enforcement order.

In the instant case the time period should be less than thirty days. Secondly, grant of six months period to the licensee will create discrimination in the circumstances that the Authority has already passed orders against five mobile operators on the issue of poor QoS and required them to remedy the contravention within twenty nine days.

Car racing tragedy: general managers of PTCL get pre-arrest bail

Two senior officers of Pakistan Telecommunication Company (PTCL) have obtained pre-arrest bail in the case of drag race in Bahria Town last December.

Lubna Jahangir and Mohammad Ali Khan, both general managers, got interim bail till April 12 from the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Chaudhry Aurangzeb. They also submitted surety bonds of Rs50, 000 each.

Earlier, the two managers moved the court on March 25 and obtained bail till April 4 after Deputy Inspector General Mubashirullah, who is investigating the drag car race in which five spectators were killed, told the Supreme Court that PTCL and Pakistan State Oil sponsored the event.

On Monday, Rawat police did not submit the relevant record of the case to oppose the bail plea. In their application, the PTCL general managers maintained that the company did not provide any financial or management support to the Hyper Performance Racing Association (HPRA), which organised the race without the permission of Rawalpindi administration in Phase-VIII of Bahria Town.

They said the company only marketed one of its products at the event after Atif Sheikh, chief executive officer of HPRA, assured them that all necessary measures to protect the drivers and spectators had been taken.
