Nokia Recycling Program Envisions a Greener Pakistan

Nokia leads six companies into Pakistan’s first large scale campaign for Mobile Phone recycling- Recycleyour phone and get a chance to win a brand new Nokia N8

Nokia recently kicked-off a two month long Mobile Phone Take Back and Recycling Campaign in collaboration with Ufone, Unilever, Radio FM 91, ARY Music, Orient Advertising and United Media. All the companies involved in the campaign joined hands to improve the environmental awareness in Pakistan and to provide an easily accessible solution for responsible recycling of mobile phones, accessories, chargers and mobile batteries of all brands. Recycling is processing old materials into something new in order to prevent wasting useful material, to cut down on energy consumption and to reduce the need for waste land filling that can spoil Pakistan’s environment.

People all across Pakistan are contributing to the campaign by recycling old and redundant or even broken mobiles that are no longer of use. Taking part in this campaign is easy: simply bring your old mobile devices, chargers, batteries and accessories of all brands to one of the 33 Nokia Care Centres or Ufone Sales and Service Centres across the country. The campaign will give a free gift hamper from Unilever and a chance to win a brand new Nokia N8 device only if person will drop off a mobile phone for recycling (all brands accepted).

Nokia Mobile Phone Take Back and Recycling Program rolled out in Pakistan during 2010. At this point in time, Nokia aims to increase awareness about why it is important to recycle your old phone and how easy it can be done.

Talking about Nokia’s contribution to environment in Pakistan, Adeel Hashmi, Communications Manager, Nokia Pakistan & Afghanistan, said, “Nokia has a comprehensive sustainability and environmental strategy and recycling is one of the key aspects covered. We understand that leadership means responsibility, that’s why at Nokia we consider the environment in everything we do and even go beyond our own operations and products: we want to give that chance to our consumers as well because we understand that a power of a billion people can do a lot of good to our environment. If the 4.6 billion people using mobile phones recycled just one unused phone at the end of its life, together we would save nearly 370,000 tons of raw materials and reduce greenhouse gases to the same effect as taking 6 million cars off the road.”

According to Nokia’s global consumer survey on recycling, only 3% of people said they had recycled their old phone – whereas 44% of old mobile phones are lying at home for no use and not being recycled. The survey revealed that one of the main reasons why so few people recycle their mobile phones is because they simply don’t know that it is possible to do so. Mobile devices and accessories contain raw materials which – if recycled in a responsible high standard process – can be reused in many ways to make new things, such as musical instruments or even dental fillings. 100 percent of the materials in Nokia devices can be recovered and used to make new products or generate energy.

Commenting on the campaign kick-off, Reza Burney, Country Care Manager Nokia Pakistan & Afghanistan said, “It is an exciting moment for Nokia to bring an opportunity for Pakistani consumers to make a positive contribution to the environment. Nokia has more than 5,000 recycling points globally in almost 100 countries. In Pakistan, we initiated an awareness drive to help people understand recycling and its benefits, and in addition we facilitate that all collected devices, chargers, accessories and batteries are recycled in a responsible way according to high environmental standards. By working together, small individual actions can add up to make a big difference and we have made recycling old mobile phones very simple for people. All they need to do is drop in the old mobile phone, charger, battery or accessories of any brand at one of our collection points and we’ll take care of the rest.”

Nokia does neither resell the phones nor carry out refurbishment business as there is no control over the quality or safety of the phones after restoration. Instead, Nokia works with carefully selected, approved recyclers who reclaim materials according to highest environmental and international standards.

Complementing its green initiative, Nokia has also introduced a number of green apps on its Ovi Store that help people contribute to a better environment through fun activities. A complete list of environment friendly apps is available on www.ovi.com/dogood website.

RIM Blocks Pornographic Sites in Indonesia: Why can’t this be Done in Pakistan?

BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM) made an announcement this Thursday that it has started Internet filtering on its smartphones in Indonesia. The Indonesian government had issued a deadline for RIM to begin blocking porn websites. RIM complied with it. This is the first time that such a move has been made in any country.

“RIM is now in the process of implementing an Internet content-filtering solution that addresses our carrier partners’ regulatory obligations in Indonesia” RIM said.

In response, Indonesian Communication Minister Tifatul Sembiring—who has been at the forefront of the government’s efforts to clamp down on pornography—said on his Twitter account; “Thank God RIM has complied with Indonesian regulations. Pornography has been blocked. Please go ahead with business as usual in compliance with the law.”

In Pakistan since May 2010, BlackBerry users continue to face difficulties in web browsing and connectivity due to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority’s (PTA) instructions to telecom companies which called for blocking access to blasphemous content following the now-lifted ban on Facebook.

After successful content restriction in Indonesia few questions arise:

  1. Why can’t the same be done for Pakistan? What stops them?
  2. When RIM can block porn, why can’t they block selected blasphemous content for Pakistan?
  3. Is it because of lack of efforts from PTA and Pakistani mobile operators OR RIM intentionally does not wish to do so?

Also to note here is that RIM also has been under pressure in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia to provide access to data on its secure networks. The company averted a ban on key BlackBerry services in both after the countries said regulatory requirements had been satisfied. The encryption is central to the company’s appeal to corporate customers, which say that secure communications are necessary. Across border, in India, the government has sought access to data on RIM’s secure networks, fearing that encryption makes them convenient for terrorists and RIM is in ongoing and positive talks with them.

We will close here and look forward to your opinion/comments on the matter.

Sab Keh Do: Inspiring Self-expression, Communication and Positive Change

sub kah do day Sab Keh Do: Inspiring Self expression, Communication and Positive Change

We have all heard of international observances or days dedicated in support of a cause or to mark an issue of concern or interest and promote awareness, such as Earth Day, World Cancer Day, International Women’s Day, Valentines Day, Friendship Day, World Poetry Day, World Health Day, World Dance Day, World Smile Day and so on.

Friendship Day, for example, which began in the US, is celebrated with great zeal and hype around the occasion, to create awareness about the Day and promote friendship and brotherhood. Although the reasons for establishing this Day are not clear, the retrospection of the world scenario in those days can lead us to an understanding.

With the devastating effects of First World War, such as increased hostilities and hatred between countries, there was a greater need for friendship among individuals and nations. Hence, in 1935 the US Congress dedicated a Day in the honor of friends and friendship, and it became an annual event, which was adopted by several other countries. Friendship Day is celebrated around the world, including Pakistan, with friends exchanging cards, flowers and gifts.

In Pakistan, many such traditions and international observances are adopted and celebrated, such as International Women’s Day, Valentines Day and so on. The Sab Keh Do day, was launched as a unique initiative in Pakistan in April 2009, to celebrate the importance of self-expression and welcome people to say what is on their minds; to express their feelings, views and thoughts freely. By promoting open communication, the Day is a much needed initiative to bridge gaps.

Sab Keh Do is a step in the right direction to encourage communication and increased dialogue between individuals, to promote a positive change in society. Research has shown that poor communication fosters misunderstandings, impaired trust, disagreements, ill feelings and conflict among people. The objective of Sab Keh Do is to create a culture of honesty and respect, and promotes love and peace, by encouraging people to express their feelings openly, clear misunderstandings and build positive communication.

In an increasingly globalized world, with the facilities of modern communication technologies available to us, staying in touch with family and friends in different cities or countries is as simple as making a phone call or sending an SMS.

This year, the Sab Keh Do theme song sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, with its inspiring lyrics and melodious beat, puts a smile on your face every time you listen to it. It truly reflects the spirit of Sab Keh Do and spreads the message of positive communication, friendship, love, honesty and peace.

When The Sab Keh Do was celebrated in 2009 and 2010, various activities were held, including painting and essay writing competitions in more than 100 schools across Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. These paintings and essays were also included in the Sab Keh Do carnivals held during the month. The Sab Keh Do team interacted with students and encouraged them to express themselves through paintings and essays. This activity promoted talent and creativity in children and but also gave them an avenue for self-expression. There is a need for more such innovative and progressive activities in schools in Pakistan, to foster creativity and healthy competition among children.

Although the Sab Keh Do Day is marked in our calendars as a Day to be celebrated on any weekend of the month of April, it is more than just a Day; it is an inspiring vision which continues to touch the hearts of many, and it is truly the first step towards betterment of society. Sab Keh Do promotes a culture of open communication, honesty and respect and will surely albeit gradually bring about a positive change in the mindset of people, especially the younger generation, who are responsible for the future of our country.

Israel Trying to Develop Relations with Pakistan Through Facebook

Social Media especially Facebook and Twitter are very much popular all around the globe. Every one is using them whether he/she is a student, businessman, housewives, religious scholars etc.

Name anyone from any class of life and you will find him a user of any of the above mentioned media.

The popularity is increasing by every passing day. We have already seen that businesses are advertising and winning customers through Facebook whereas recruiters are recruiting potential candidates through Facebook too. Some are making friends while others are searching for their life partners. All this and many more activities like games, information gathering are being carried out through these social networks.

Israel in Pakistan Facebook Page thumb Israel Trying to Develop Relations with Pakistan Through FacebookAll of the above mentioned activities may not look odd to anyone but what is interesting about the Facebook is that it may be the first time that social media is being used to develop relationships with other country.

As we all know that Pakistan has no diplomatic relations with Israel and infect Pakistan hasn’t recognized Israel till yet but in an attempt to foster relationships with Pakistani people, especially with youth, Israel has decided to use much popular social media Facebook.

They have created a page on Facebook by the name of Israel in Pakistan.

At first, by the title of Page, it looks as if Israeli embassy is working in Pakistan but when you go into “info” tab, only then situation gets little clearer.

The information mentioned on the page is as below:

Since Israel and Pakistan do not enjoy formal diplomatic relations, this online embassy serves to foster friendship between nationals of Israel and Pakistan on Facebook. Hopefully we can soon build real embassies in Pakistan and Israel, Shalom!

Mission

“The Embassy of Israel in Pakistan has created this Facebook page as a resource of information on Israel and provides updates on the Mission’s activities to the general public.”

For the time being they have also allowed user postings on the page and till date 2350 people have joined the page. The page is being advertised rigorously through Facebook adverts. Till now most of the postings on the page contain hatred and racism against Jews & Israel.

Let’s see how much they will be successful in their attempt to develop relations with Pakistan. But one thing that people should do that despite the hatred with Israel they should comment or post in a civilized manner as they are representing Pakistan.

Right now people are posting in an offensive, uncivilized manner which is bringing disrepute for them and country as well.

Moreover this matter should be taken at Pakistan Government level and government should devise a strategy in this regard too.

A Pakistani Student Develops a Foot Mouse

clip image001 thumb1 A Pakistani Student Develops a Foot Mouse

The foot mouse, as name suggests is an innovative computer mouse that users can control with their feet.

It is being developed by Mohammad Ahsan, a computer information system engineering student at NED University of engineering and technology.

This hands free mouse is a true reflection of Pakistan youth hunger and desire for innovation.

The foot mouse currently is in its development phase. Ahsan has designed three prototypes using different materials. Firstly using wood for the sandal’s structure, then rubber and finally with current composite material product, wooden base with rubber upper. The product is being further improved.

This innovation will significantly help disabled persons to work on computer effectively.

According to an Express tribune report, the association of the physically handicapped Adults (APHA) says that 10 percent of the people in Pakistan are disabled in one way or another.

Initially foot mouse was exclusively designed for people with disabilities, but later Ahsan found it suitable for every one. It can help users increase typing speed and can also be used as a pointing device for gamers.

Ahsan is planning to develop more products like a Braille keyboard which is currently not available in Pakistan. He is working towards the idea of ‘E can do IT’ which stands for “Every one can do Information Technology”. Main objective behind ’E can do IT’ is to make computer education easy for physically disable people in Pakistan.

Ahsan is seeking a manufacturer and investor who can help produce the item in large quantity and also market it.

No doubt Ahsan is a distinguished young genius of Pakistan and government should support his venture both financially and morally to uplift the image of Pakistan as a technology friendly country and thus bring more investment in the country.

Convofy: Social Networking for Enterprises

The expansive universe cultivated by Facebook demonstrates the changing trend in networking and social behavior exhibited by the internet populace. Left behind are the days when one would find pen pals in corners of the world; we now find friends through a web medium that not only gives a brief intro, but also provides some assurance in terms of common contacts.

If one is to review the history of Facebook, a common story with the release of the motion picture “The Social Network”, the interesting factor found common is the initial thinking that led to the planting of the roots for this giant. It was exclusivity; a club that only a few could get into, while everyone wanted to be in it. In fact, even Orkut employed a similar technique in its heyday, requiring an invitation from members to join.

However, opening up the club proved to be the best thing for Facebook, propelling it into the heights of the internet world, and of course, making a billionaire out of its founder.

Instead of emailing your friends and family and attaching pictures, you could simply share your life and even your daily routine with your world; all through one portal. As the popularity has climbed, more developers have taken to this one platform to share their wares, from games to markets. And this has meant that the time spent by an average user of the site has also increased dramatically, in some cases, alarmingly.

This is one of the reasons why many workplaces have restricted worker access to social networking sites from the office, with information security and confidentiality also playing vital roles.

The various researches done so far have shown diverging results on what would be the best solution for a more open and productive workplace. In fact, a recent Gartner report showed a decline in the use of email communication corresponding with an increase in social network mediums as primary contact platforms. The hypothesis by the report states that social platforms could become the solitary modes in the next 5 years for all forms of communication; email, notes, messages, photos, etc.

Taking into account the global trend, enterprises have to make decisions on how to utilize the social platform; incorporate or segregate. Some organizations have welcomed Facebook openly, relying on the strong member base to promote and market their brands and environment. Others have kept the gates closed.

This is an arena that has become the new battleground for software houses, with Yammer and Salesforce applying the early breaks to introduce enterprise-specific social portals.

The model utilized by these enterprise options is similar to Facebook’s historic model; allowing people of one domain network to connect. In such cases, an enterprise deploys a social platform for all its employees to utilize for all communication, at the office and beyond the doors of the workplace. For a large organization, this is one of the best and low-cost ways to have its people get to know each other, especially in light of the segmentation and segregation that most large entities employ for efficient working processes. Additionally, with Admin control remaining in the hands of the company, the chances of mischief can be minimized.
