PTCL to invest Rs16 billion in next five years: Walid

Pakistan Telecommunications Company (PTCL), would invest about Rs16 billion in telecommunications sector in next five years in Pakistan, this was stated by the President and CEO PTCL Walid Irshad.

Addressing a luncheon meeting at Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI), Irshad said that PTCL is going to introduce super-speed internet very soon in Pakistan and it would be started from Korangi Industrial Area.

“The era of conventional telephone exchanges is now over and most modern exchanges would now be installed in Pakistan. PTCL is not being run just as Phone Company but as an investment-oriented company which is striving hard to introduce most modern telecommunications services,” he said.

He said that first ever new generation telephone exchange would be introduced in Karachi He said that PTCL has already minimized the subscribers’ complaints and with the introduction of new services and new generation telephone exchanges, the complaints would become nil.

The Chairman, KATI, Syed Johar Ali Qandhari said in his welcome address that telecommunications plays vital role in trade and industry and PTCL has improved its performance over the years.

He said that sometimes industrialists face hardships in broadband and internet which needs to be improved. He said that PTCL should set up a full-fledged cell at KATI so that subscribers’ woes should be addressed.

Warid, Wateen Headquarter May Shift to Islamabad

The managements of Warid Tel and Wateen, the two major telecom and broadband operators of Dhabi Group, are mulling to relocate companies’ headquarter to Islamabad as a strategy to boost up their operations and business with accelerated pace.

Sources in the Dhabi Group told Telecom Recorder that management of two companies have planned to shift their head offices in Islamabad from Lahore for better coordination with telecom regulator, concerned ministry and different operators of telecom sector.

Though operator have its regional office in Islamabad, which maintain liaison with headquarter over policy issues of telecom sector directly but the new management want to establish main office in Islamabad as all four cellular operator headquarters are based in Islamabad.

Sources said the new management deliberated that the relocation of their head office may help them to implement the policies and regulations of the telecom authority with better understand as top brass will look after day to day affairs and operations in the capital of the country.

Previously, they added, the key officials Pervez Shahid and Bashir Tahir were based in Lahore, therefore, the companies head offices remain functional in their residential cities.

Sources confirmed, Zohair Khaliq the Executive Director of the Dhabi Group and former CEO Mobilink, has proposed the idea taking in confidence his fellow board members on relocation of headquarter.

According to them, he said the operations of the company will be streamlined in well connected manner if they are based in capital of the country.

Warid Tel launched its services in 2005 whereas its sister organization Wateen commenced its services in 2007.

Mobilink thanks affected users

With a view to thank its customers for their patience and loyalty, Mobilink has announced a phased plan for customers who experienced disruption in service. This is the first time a reward of this scale has been announced and awarded by any telecom operator in the country for disruption caused by a force majeure event.

Sharing his views, Mobilink President & CEO Rashid Khan shared that while it was difficult to make up for the missed experience, the company cherishes customers who continue to prefer Mobilink and this is a humble gesture of goodwill by the company for their patience and loyalty.

A fire incident at one of the company’s technical hubs in Islamabad on March 6, 2011 caused suspension of cellular services in Islamabad, Rawalpindi and some pockets outside the twin cities. With the support of a dedicated team, the network was partially revived within a few hours and complete connectivity was restored within 24 hours. Customers were updated of the incident and restoration via press announcements by the company at the time. To facilitate customers who were directly affected by the incident, the company has announced free minutes and SMS for prepaid customers whereas postpaid customers will receive an adjustment against their monthly bill.

Affected subscribers will be intimated by the company through SMS in a phase wise activity scheduled from May 14, 2011 to June 13, 2011. Customers may dial 111 at any time from their Mobilink connections for any queries.

India Beat Pakistan In Tele-density Growth

Pakistan has failed to maintain its status of a county with highest tele-density among SAARC nations as India has superseded a top position in the region with overwhelming adoption of technology and telephony services by it masses.

India attained a crown status in the region with its faster growth in number of telephony services subscriptions but also in technology and investment inflow.

Pakistan tele-density remained highest among the countries of South Asia till January 2011 with the modest annual growth continued in the last couple of years despite strict corrective measures and cutting-throat competition has been slowed down the industry telecommunication expansion.

Pakistan total tele-density has been reached 66.8 percent by February 2011 with overall 110.3 million users including mobile phone, landline, and wireless whereas Indian tele-density reached 68.4 percent with number total users stood at 826.25 million in February 2011.

In June 2010, Pakistan’s tele-density has maintained at 64.16 percent by end of 2009-10, showing 2.14 percent growth from proceeding fiscal year whereas the India’s tele-density remained at 56.83 percent.

The Indian tele-density witnessed more than 2 percent growth on monthly basis whereas Pakistan tele-density grew with the same growth rate in six months particularly during the last couple of years.

Though the country has been witnessing constant growth in number of subscribers particularly in cellular sector, it could not retain its top position in South Asia as a country with the highest tele-density.

Pakistan Tele-density and Subscribers of Telephony Services

Pakistan cellular phone subscription witnessed constant growth in the country amid stiff price war and services by operators, crossing 105 million mark with the tele-density reached 63.2 percent by February 2011.

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) latest update statistics showed the subscription of mobile operators in the current fiscal year registered tremendous growth with the increase of 5.96 million on the networks of different operators from July to February.

The total number of cellular phone SIMs has increased to 105.151 million on the networks of five operators by February 2011.

The landline connections have been continued to show decline in Pakistan and stood at 3.4 million by six operators in different regions of the country. The wireless sector also showed discouraging trend with flat growth of subscribers stand at 2.78 million amid immense competition and falling rates.

Pakistan had the highest tele-density of 26.26 in region with 40.72 overall users of different telephony services in 2005. In India, the total subscriber base, landline and mobile put together, stands at 112.7million with tele-density of 10.2 percent as on September 2005.

In terms of population and number of users Pakistan has been retained the highest of country in the highest tele-density till 2011. The tele-density is calculated as number of telephone connections per 100 people. The tele-density of Pakistan is evaluated with 160 million mark whereas India is with 1.25 billion.

India Tele-density and Subscribers of Telephony Services

Now, the number of telephone subscribers in India increased to 846.32 million at the end of March 2011 as compared with 826.25 million in February 2011, thereby registering a growth rate of 2.43 per cent. The overall tele-density in India reached 70.89 by March.

Wireless subscriber base increased from 791.38 million in February 2011 to 811.59 million registering a growth of 2.55 per cent. Wireless tele-density stands at 67.98.

Landline subscriber base declined from 34.87 million in February 2011 to 34.73 million at the end of March 2011. BSNL/MTNL, two PSU operators, hold 82.61 per cent of the wire line market share.

India is ahead of Pakistan for launching an advanced cellular phone services, that is, 3G with nearly one million of customers in nine cities having high per capita income. On the other hand, Pakistan has yet to be introduced this technology in the country because of telecom operators unwillingness and reluctance on the grounds of low purchasing power of users and lack of earning opportunities against heavy investment.

Pakistan is leading in the cellular users who migrated through a service called Mobile Number Portability(MNP) launched in 2004. India introduced MNP services in January 2011.

Same Features of Two Countries’ Telecom Sectors

There are few features of the two countries and telecom sectors remain similar.

The tele-density remained high in the heavily populated 30 cities of both countries mainly with high economic activities and income power. The rest of the cities have been witnessed slow penetration despite number of telecommunication operators are more than of country’s demand, analysts said.

The number users having more than one connection have also been increasing in significant numbers because of different packages offered by cellular operators.

The actual figures of phone users are not accurate and less than reported by the authorities because millions are connections are inactive in many parts of the country.

Despite all these, the number of subscription in different telecom services are forecast to be increasing with emerging technology and growth in rural areas of both countries with huge land and populated areas.

In Pakistan, analysts said, the users subscribers base is likely to contract significantly after unverified and unregistered SIMs are blocked in millions. The campaign of PTA initiated on the direction of interior ministry will cut the huge subscription and overall tele-density in the country.

However, the number of users will be added again after cleansing process in the country once after huge SIMs will be blocked by mobile phone users, they said and added there is a need to re-set the population benchmark after fresh consensus which is expected to be crossed 180 million in Pakistan.

Ufone Posts Handsome Growth; Revenues up 16% and Profits up 78% in 3QFY11

Ufone continued its remarkable track record in the telecom industry with handsome growth in revenues by 16 percent and in profit by 78 percent in the third quarter of current fiscal year ended in March 2010.

Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) financial report said that it wholly-subsidiary outperformed again to consolidate a quite strengthening position of the company in terms of its financial stability.

Ufone, the wholly owned subsidiary of PTCL, revenue could be increased to 14 billion in the third quarter of 2010-11 whereas and profit could be to reach at Rs1.5 billion as per estimate of last calendar and quarter earnings and profitability.

The report did not disclose the absolute number of profit and revenue of Ufone, which is also called as Pak Telecom Mobile Limited (PTML).

Ufone revenues and profits were considered as significant for the overall earning of the parent company, PTCL. The remarkable results once again support the whole group to announce better result in the third quarter despite high overall operating cost and multiple losses on different accounts.

The PTCL net profit of Rs. 7.91 billion showed a 14 percent decline compared to same period last year. The Profit-after-Tax stood at Rs. 4.97 billion was 37 percent lower than the same period last year mainly because of increased employment cost.

Ufone earning witnessed record growth with handsome in crease in profit by 82 percent and revenue by 16 percent in first half of current fiscal year 2010-11.

Its revenues and profit were estimated to cross Rs 25 billion and Rs 2 billion benchmark on growing earnings and profitability.
